Why (and When) It’s Okay to Ask for Help

No matter how hard you work, you'll never know everything there is to know about your job. There will always be things you don't know, and that is ok. Everyone faces moments when they need help, and it is vital to ask for it if you need it.

We know that is easier said than done. Below we have a few situations that definitely call for a helping hand.

1. Unclear Instructions

If you have been given a task but are unclear about what is expected of you, ask for clarification. You are not a mind reader. When you are unclear about instructions, it is best to ask for clarification as quickly as possible, so you do not waste time. The last thing you want to do in this situation is to sit around doing nothing and panicking over your confusion. Asking for clarification is always the better option.

2. If You Have too Much To Do

Sometimes we take on more than we can chew. If you are always open to every project that comes down the pipeline instead of delegating, you will end up buried under your workload. If you know there is no way that you will be able to meet your deadlines with the amount of work you have, ask for help from your team. It may feel like neglecting your responsibilities, but the main goal is to complete the work efficiently. Remember, everyone has found themselves in this position at least once.

3. When You Made a Mistake

Everyone makes mistakes, and you will inevitably make some at work. If you get to a point where you make a mistake and don't know how to fix it, ask for help. The worst thing you can do is try to sweep it under the rug. You may end up just making the problem worse. While it may be a bit embarrassing, asking for assistance helps you solve your problem and shows you how to avoid this mistake in the future.

4.  You Have No Idea What You're Doing

Asking for help in moments like these is a lesson in professional vulnerability. While it may be difficult to admit, it is one of the most important times to ask for help because the alternative is a complete lack of productivity. If you have recently started a new project, it is ok not to know how to start. Your best bet is to ask for help as soon as you can. Change your perspective on the situation, and try to view it as the learning opportunity it is.
