It's All About the Details

Details are important. The problem is too many details can lead to information overload, making it difficult to find and use the details that matter most. While sometimes taking a step back can help clear things up, that might not always be the answer. In cases like those, one of the best things you can do is sift through the information and clear away the excess to focus on what really matters. Unfortunately, like most things, this is easier said than done. Below are a few tips on how to avoid information overload and focus on the right details.

1.   Be Picky

With all the things happening in a given day, meetings, emails, and tasks to complete, you may be a lot less likely to be proactive. When you’re selective on what you dedicate your time to, by delegating out tasks and getting rid of what’s less important to work on, you can cut down on the amount of information entering your brain. That gives you significantly more time to focus on what matters most and dedicate brainpower to the correct details.

2.  Start With The End In Mind

If you start any task or project with a clear objective in mind, it will be easier to focus on only the information that helps you achieve your goals. With a clear objective in mind, take some time to think about the gaps in your knowledge and dedicate your energy to filling in those gaps. Doing this will point your efforts in the right direction and limit the amount of mental clutter you’ll have to deal with. Of course, this is easier said than done, but you can move past the mental block with the right mindset.

3. Don’t Rush

When you’re working on completing a task, do your best not to rush. Rushing makes you more likely to miss important details or opportunities because your brain is more focused on completing the task than producing a great finished product. Starting your projects as early as possible will allow you to review it with a fine-toothed comb.

4. Take A Break

As cliche as it may sound, when your brain is tired, it’s harder to focus. Taking breaks from time to time allows your brain to reset and helps you find solutions with fresh eyes. Moreover, taking breaks can make you more productive by limiting the time spent overcoming the roadblock. Walking away and returning to a project or task that gives you trouble can provide you with just the clarity you need to move forward.

5. Don’t Multitask

Although it sounds like a valuable skill on the surface, only about 2.5% of people are able to multitask efficiently. For the rest of us, the attempt to quickly switch back and forth between tasks reduces productivity. You can’t keep track of every detail for one task if you’re trying to focus on another. Instead, designate time during the day for each of your major projects, ensuring you can prioritize what matters most.
